Beijing’s quiet diplomacy may have pushed Tehran toward talks amid rising global pressure.
China may have played a decisive behind-the-scenes role in convincing Iran to agree to a two-week ceasefire with the United States, according to remarks by former US President Donald Trump.
Responding to a question from AFP on whether Beijing influenced Tehran’s decision, Trump said, “From what I’ve heard, yes.”
China, Iran’s largest trading partner, reportedly had strong motivation to de-escalate tensions, particularly ahead of a planned meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump in mid-May. The visit had already been delayed due to escalating conflict.
Sources cited by Associated Press suggest that Beijing worked discreetly but effectively, coordinating with mediators such as Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt to encourage Iran toward negotiations. Chinese officials were reportedly in constant communication with Iranian counterparts throughout the process.
While Beijing has not issued an official statement confirming its role, officials indicated that China sought to leverage its influence through regional intermediaries. The move is seen as part of China’s broader effort to assert a stronger presence in global diplomacy.
A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, Mao Ning, urged all parties to act sincerely and bring a swift end to the conflict, emphasizing that it “should never have started.” She also expressed deep concern over the war’s impact on the global economy and energy security.
Meanwhile, China and Russia recently vetoed a United Nations resolution aimed at ensuring the safety of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. China’s UN envoy Fu Cong argued that passing the resolution at this stage could send the wrong message amid heightened tensions.
