Former FBI chief Robert Mueller dies at 81

The Chronify

Robert Mueller, the former FBI director and special counsel whose investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election became one of the defining political and legal episodes of Donald Trump’s first term, has died at the age of 81, according to statements from his family and former law firm.

Mueller led the FBI from 2001 to 2013, taking charge just days before the September 11 attacks. During his tenure, he oversaw a major transformation of the bureau, shifting its focus more deeply toward counterterrorism and homeland security while serving under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

He returned to the center of US politics in 2017 when he was appointed special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible links between Moscow and Trump’s campaign. His nearly two year inquiry produced multiple indictments and guilty pleas involving Trump associates and Russian operatives, and concluded that Russia had interfered in the election in a sweeping and systematic way.

Mueller’s final report did not establish a criminal conspiracy between Trump’s campaign and Russia, but it also did not clear Trump on obstruction of justice. Because of longstanding Justice Department policy against charging a sitting president, Mueller did not bring charges against Trump while he was in office.

Before his years at the FBI, Mueller served as a Marine in Vietnam and was decorated for bravery, receiving honors that included the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He later built a long career in federal law enforcement and the Justice Department, gaining a reputation for discipline, restraint, and institutional loyalty.

Tributes followed quickly after news of his death. Bush said he was deeply saddened and praised Mueller’s leadership after 9/11, while Obama called him one of the finest FBI directors in the bureau’s history. Former colleagues and law enforcement figures also described him as a principled public servant whose career was defined by integrity and duty.

The reaction from Trump was starkly different. In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote that he was glad Mueller was dead, prompting immediate backlash from critics and adding one last bitter political note to a relationship shaped for years by the Russia investigation.

Mueller is survived by his wife, Ann Cabell Standish, their two daughters, and three grandchildren.
