Senior officials from the BSF and BGB are meeting in New Delhi to discuss border security, crime prevention and measures aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Senior border security officials from India and Bangladesh have begun a four-day conference in New Delhi focused on strengthening border management, enhancing security cooperation and addressing a range of issues affecting the shared international frontier.

The 57th Director General-level Border Coordination Conference between India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) commenced on June 8 and is scheduled to continue through June 11. The meeting represents the highest-level regular engagement between the two border forces and serves as a key platform for discussing operational and administrative matters related to border security.

The Indian delegation is being led by BSF Director General Praveen Kumar, while the Bangladeshi delegation is headed by Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, Director General of the BGB. The latest round of talks follows a similar meeting held in Dhaka in August 2025.

Officials from both countries are reviewing a broad range of border-related issues, including efforts to combat transnational crime, prevent unauthorized cross-border activities and strengthen coordination between security agencies operating along the frontier.

Discussions are also focused on incidents affecting border personnel and civilians, as well as measures to improve overall security conditions in sensitive border areas. Authorities are examining challenges related to border infrastructure, including fencing projects and concerns surrounding unauthorized crossings.

Another important topic under discussion is the handling of reported pushback incidents and efforts to address activities linked to insurgent groups that may operate in border regions. Security cooperation and intelligence-sharing mechanisms are also expected to feature prominently during the meetings.

In addition to security matters, both delegations are reviewing confidence-building measures designed to improve communication, reduce misunderstandings and enhance mutual trust between the two forces. Such initiatives have long been regarded as important tools for maintaining stability along one of South Asia’s busiest international borders.

The conference is part of a long-standing bilateral framework established under the Joint India-Bangladesh Guidelines for Border Authorities signed in 1975. Since then, the mechanism has evolved into a regular platform for addressing border concerns and fostering cooperation between the neighboring countries.

Originally held once a year, the meetings have been conducted twice annually since 1993 and are hosted alternately by India and Bangladesh. The process has played a significant role in facilitating dialogue on border management and strengthening institutional ties between the two security forces.

Officials from both sides are expected to continue discussions throughout the week, with any decisions, agreements or areas of progress likely to be outlined in a joint statement following the conclusion of the conference.

The talks come at a time when both countries are seeking to enhance regional security cooperation while maintaining stable and constructive bilateral relations through established diplomatic and operational channels.
