Newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has expressed optimism about the future of Bangladesh-India relations, emphasizing shared history, culture, and mutual interests while pledging to work together for the benefit of the people of both nations.
India's newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, arrived in Bangladesh through the Benapole-Petrapole land border on Friday, delivering a message of cooperation and shared prosperity between the two neighbouring countries.
Trivedi entered Bangladesh around 11:00am via the Benapole land port, where he was welcomed at the no-man's land area by officials from Bangladesh's Ministry of Home Affairs, representatives of the Indian High Commission, and Benapole land port authorities. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrinal Trivedi. Following the reception, he departed for Dhaka by road at approximately 12:30pm.
Speaking to journalists shortly after his arrival, the veteran Indian politician underscored the deep cultural and historical ties between Bangladesh and India.
"India and Bengal share the same sky, the same air, and the same pain. I do not feel like I have entered a foreign country," Trivedi said. "Whatever benefits the 160 crore people of our two nations 140 crore in India and 20 crore in Bangladesh is what we should strive to achieve together."
Highlighting areas of potential collaboration, he stressed the importance of joint efforts in technology, sports, healthcare, education, and innovation.
"The technological innovations taking place can be advanced together by Bangladesh and India. Imagine how wonderful it would be if we could work together in every field from sports and health to education and technology. For this, support from both sides is essential," he added.
When asked about recent tensions along the border, including allegations of push-ins and concerns over restrictions affecting travel and trade, Trivedi reiterated his commitment to pursuing initiatives that would serve the interests of citizens in both countries.
"We will take steps that are beneficial for both Bangladesh and India. The future should be guided by what is best for our people," he said.
India appointed Dinesh Trivedi as its 18th High Commissioner to Bangladesh in April this year, replacing career diplomat Pranay Verma, who has been assigned as India's Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
Trivedi's appointment marks a significant departure from India's traditional diplomatic practice of appointing senior Indian Foreign Service officials to the post. In the 55-year history of Bangladesh-India diplomatic relations, he is the first politician to serve as India's High Commissioner in Dhaka.
A former Indian railway minister and an experienced parliamentarian, the 75-year-old leader is considered close to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite belonging to a Gujarati business family, Trivedi is fluent in Bengali and has long-standing connections with West Bengal's political landscape.
Observers believe his political experience, familiarity with Bengali culture, and understanding of regional sensitivities could play an important role in addressing key bilateral issues, including border management, visa facilitation, trade cooperation, and strengthening people-to-people ties between the two neighbouring countries.
