Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle Dies at 92 in Mumbai
Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle died in Mumbai on Sunday at the age of 92, according to her family, ending one of the most influential careers in South Asian music. She was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital after suffering from chest infection and extreme exhaustion.
Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed her death and said her last rites would be held on Monday at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Tributes began pouring in soon after the announcement, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourning the loss of a singer whose voice shaped generations of Indian film music.
Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages and became one of the defining voices of Bollywood music, especially from the 1970s through the 1980s. She was also a two time Grammy nominee and received some of India’s highest cultural honours, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan.
Bhosle’s death closes a major chapter in Indian cinema and music. Known for her range across film songs, ghazals, pop, folk and classical inspired compositions, she built a legacy that crossed languages, genres and generations, leaving a catalogue that remains central to the history of Indian popular music.
