Hindu groups protested the display of a Quranic verse inside a government primary school in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, prompting authorities to suspend two staff members pending an inquiry.

A controversy has surfaced in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh after Hindu organisations objected to a framed Quranic verse displayed at a government primary school, leading to the suspension of a Muslim assistant teacher and the school’s headmistress.

The incident occurred at a primary school in Nagla Purva village under the Kurh Fatehgarh police station area. According to local sources, members of Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad arrived at the school after learning that a Quranic verse was hanging above the entrance of a classroom. The groups demanded immediate administrative action, arguing that government-run educational institutions should remain free of religious symbols.

The protesters also accused assistant teacher Mohammad Nazim of allegedly teaching Islamic lessons to students, an allegation he firmly denied. Speaking to reporters, Nazim stated that he strictly follows the government-prescribed curriculum and has never imparted religious instruction to any student. Several villagers supported his claim, describing the accusations as unfounded.

Videos from the scene, later circulated on social media, show activists questioning teachers, inspecting classrooms, blackboards, and books, and moving across the school premises. Protesters further claimed that posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Goddess Saraswati had been removed from the school. School staff, however, rejected these allegations.

After a written complaint was submitted in the presence of police officials, the framed Quranic verse was removed. Soon after, Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Alka Sharma ordered the suspension of headmistress Pushpa Jatav and assistant teacher Mohammad Nazim. She said the action was taken as a precautionary measure and confirmed that a formal inquiry had been initiated, citing violations of school norms.

The suspensions have drawn criticism from local education activists and community members, who questioned the speed of the decision. Some argued that punitive action before the completion of an investigation, particularly following public protests, could set a troubling precedent. Residents of the village noted that the school had not faced any prior complaints and suggested the teacher may have been targeted due to his religious identity.

Observers have compared the incident to a similar case in Mathura in 2023, where a Muslim headmaster was suspended following allegations of religious coercion. His suspension was later revoked after an inquiry cleared him of wrongdoing.

As the investigation in Sambhal continues, the episode has reignited debate over the consistent application of rules in public institutions, administrative independence, and the growing impact of communal pressure on educators and school administration.
