Nepal’s Popular Revolt Raises Tensions for India

The Chronify

A major political storm has erupted again in South Asia, this time centered on Nepal. Violent protests have erupted nationwide in response to the government’s decision to ban social media platforms, rapidly escalating into a serious crisis. At least 20 people have died, forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign. Protesters attacked the parliament building and set fire to the homes of several politicians. To restore order, a nationwide curfew has been imposed, and the military has been deployed.

For many observers, the scenes in Kathmandu recall the 2022 political crisis in Sri Lanka and the 2024 upheaval in Bangladesh. All three countries experienced mass protests, the fall of political leadership, and a form of state paralysis.

India’s Particular Concern

Nepal’s crisis is more than just neighborly instability for India; it is a strategic concern. Nepal is an extremely close country for India, linked by historical, economic, and social ties.

The India–Nepal border stretches 1,750 kilometers, directly connecting five Indian states. This border is largely open, with thousands crossing daily without visas or passports. Families span both sides, and strong social and cultural bonds exist even at the village level.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted swiftly to the situation in Nepal. On X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “The violence in Nepal is heartbreaking. Many young lives have been lost, which is extremely saddening. Stability, peace, and prosperity in Nepal are of utmost importance to India.” He also urged the Nepalese people to pursue peaceful action and later held an emergency security meeting with his cabinet colleagues.

However, analysts note that, as India was caught off guard during the 2022 mass uprising in Sri Lanka, the same happened in Nepal. In particular, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was scheduled to visit Delhi soon, but those plans have now been disrupted.
