Argentina Fans Accused of Violence and Racist Abuse by Egypt and Cape Verde Supporters During World Cup
Supporters from Egypt and Cape Verde have accused sections of Argentina's fanbase of throwing beer, engaging in abusive behavior and displaying provocative symbols during recent World Cup knockout matches, as FIFA faces mounting pressure to address fan misconduct.
Fresh controversy has emerged at the FIFA World Cup after supporters from Egypt and Cape Verde accused sections of Argentina's fanbase of violent and abusive behavior during the defending champions' recent knockout matches.
The allegations include claims of beer being thrown into opposing supporters' sections, racist abuse directed at spectators and social media personalities, and the display of politically provocative symbols inside stadiums. The incidents have intensified scrutiny surrounding Argentina's World Cup campaign, with fans and observers calling for stronger action against crowd misconduct.
The latest accusations followed Argentina's dramatic Round of 16 victory over Egypt in Atlanta, where Lionel Messi's side recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-2 comeback win and advance to the quarter-finals.
According to several Egyptian supporters, tensions escalated inside the stadium after Argentina equalized late in the match. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show individuals in Argentina's supporters' section throwing beer toward Egyptian fans during the celebrations.
One supporter who recorded the incident claimed that Egyptian fans had not provoked the opposing crowd during their team's earlier goals.
"When we scored, we did nothing to them. After they scored, they started attacking us," the supporter said while filming the incident from inside Atlanta Stadium.
Additional videos and photographs shared online also appeared to show some Argentina supporters waving Israeli flags toward the Egyptian coaching staff as they left the pitch after the match.
The gesture attracted attention because Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has repeatedly voiced public support for the Palestinian people during the tournament. Following Egypt's previous victory over Australia, Hassan celebrated while holding a Palestinian flag and later used his pre-match press conference to call for greater international solidarity with Palestinians.
The incidents in Atlanta were not the first involving Argentina supporters during the tournament.
Cape Verde fans also alleged that similar behavior occurred during Argentina's Round of 32 victory in Miami. Despite ultimately losing, the African side pushed the defending champions throughout the match, creating a tense atmosphere inside the stadium.
Supporters of Cape Verde claimed they were targeted by Argentina fans each time their team scored.
"We were a much smaller group of fans than them, and they attacked us with bottles after every goal," one Cape Verde supporter told reporters after the match.
The accusations come amid growing concerns over crowd behavior at the tournament, particularly following another incident involving American content creator IShowSpeed during Argentina's match against Cape Verde.
During a livestream from the stadium, the social media personality was allegedly subjected to racist abuse from a spectator wearing an Argentina shirt. The incident quickly gained widespread attention online and prompted FIFA to launch an investigation.
In response, football's governing body issued a statement condemning discriminatory behavior and reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that the World Cup remains a celebration of diversity, inclusion and mutual respect.
FIFA stated that it does not tolerate actions that undermine those values and confirmed that an investigation into the reported abuse had begun immediately after the incident was brought to its attention.
However, FIFA has not yet commented publicly on the separate allegations involving Egypt and Cape Verde supporters. Requests for comment regarding the reported incidents in Atlanta and Miami had not received an official response at the time of publication.
The controversy has added another layer of attention to Argentina's title defense as the reigning world champions prepare for their quarter-final clash against Switzerland.
While the team's performances on the field continue to attract global interest, the behavior of some supporters has become an increasing point of discussion throughout the tournament.
With several allegations now emerging from multiple matches, observers will be watching closely to see whether FIFA expands its investigations or introduces additional disciplinary measures aimed at preventing similar incidents during the remainder of the World Cup.
The governing body's response may also influence how security and fan conduct are managed as the competition enters its decisive knockout stages, where large crowds and heightened emotions are expected to continue.
