Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin discusses the government's efforts to enhance Bangladesh's export competitiveness and achieve a $100 billion export target by 2030.

Bangladesh’s government is making significant strides to diversify its export sector and reduce its reliance on the readymade garments (RMG) industry, according to Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin. The adviser made the remarks while addressing a seminar titled "Role of Competitiveness for Jobs Project on Export Diversification in Bangladesh" at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre in Purbachal on January 22, 2026.

Sheikh Bashir Uddin emphasized the importance of product diversification, supportive policies, and a skilled entrepreneurial ecosystem to expand Bangladesh’s footprint in global markets. "Entrepreneurs must be hardworking and build the right knowledge and skills to achieve their goals," he stated.

To achieve this vision, the government has initiated major reforms and investments under the Export Competitiveness for Jobs (EC4J) project, aiming to reach a $100 billion export target by 2030.

Reflecting on past policy approaches, the adviser noted that Bangladesh had previously followed cost-driven strategies that lacked strong foundations. "Now we are adopting policies, engaging with businesses, and debating openly – all in the national interest," he said, adding that the country is actively positioning itself in the face of shifting global geopolitical dynamics.

The seminar was also addressed by Commerce Ministry Additional Secretary and EC4J Project Director Md Abdur Rahim Khan, with Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman speaking as a special guest.
