At the White House in Washington, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir held a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. During the talks, they presented rare minerals to Trump.
Last Thursday, photos were released of the meeting held at the Oval Office. In the pictures, President Trump is seen looking at an open wooden box containing the minerals, while General Asim Munir points toward the box. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is seen standing nearby with a smile.
Also present at the meeting were U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The hour-and-a-half-long meeting is being regarded as a significant step forward in bilateral relations after years of strain.
According to a statement from the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif praised President Trump’s “sincere efforts” to resolve global conflicts. He described Trump as a “man of peace” and lauded his “bold and decisive” leadership in facilitating the Pakistan-India ceasefire.
The statement further noted that Shehbaz Sharif invited U.S. companies to invest in Pakistan’s agriculture, information technology, mining and minerals, and energy sectors.
Earlier in April, at a mining conference, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had said that if the country could harness its natural resources, “trillions of dollars” worth of wealth could fundamentally transform the economy. Following that vision, several agreements with the United States have already been signed.
