Putin Offers Mediation After Failed Iran–US Talks in Pakistan

Russia signals readiness to play a larger diplomatic role in Middle East peace efforts following unsuccessful negotiations between Iran and the United States in Islamabad.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to help mediate in ongoing Middle East conflicts following the reported failure of recent Iran–United States talks held in Pakistan, according to the Kremlin.

In a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin expressed Moscow’s willingness to support political and diplomatic solutions to regional tensions and emphasized Russia’s readiness to act as a potential mediator, the Kremlin said in an official statement.

The statement highlighted that Russia supports broader international efforts aimed at de-escalating conflicts in the region and promoting dialogue between the concerned parties. It also described Moscow’s role as part of a wider push to achieve what it called a “just and lasting peace” in the Middle East.

The diplomatic initiative comes at a time of increasing regional instability, following reports that high-level negotiations between Iran and the United States in Islamabad ended without reaching an agreement. Both sides reportedly accused each other of failing to compromise on key issues, despite claims of partial progress in discussions.

According to multiple reports, delegations from both countries have since left Pakistan after the breakdown of talks. The US delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, departed first, followed later by the Iranian team headed by senior officials.

Speaking after the talks, Vice President JD Vance stated that no agreement had been reached and suggested that the outcome was more damaging for Iran than for the United States. Iranian officials, however, maintained that progress had been made on several points, while disagreements remained on a few critical issues.

With diplomatic channels now under pressure, Russia’s offer is being viewed as an attempt to position itself as a key intermediary amid growing geopolitical competition and escalating tensions across the region.
