At least 64 people, including 13 children, were killed in an attack on Al Deain Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, according to the World Health Organization, in one of the deadliest recent strikes on medical infrastructure in Sudan’s war. The attack took place on Friday night and also killed patients, two female nurses and one male doctor, according to the WHO chief.

Another 89 people were wounded, including eight health workers, and the hospital’s paediatric, maternity and emergency departments were damaged, leaving the facility non functional and cutting off essential medical services in Al Deain, the state capital.

There was no immediate confirmed information on who carried out the strike. The WHO said the latest attack pushed the number of people killed in assaults on health facilities during Sudan’s war to 2,036 across 213 verified attacks.

The strike comes as Sudan’s conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, continues to drive one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Recent reporting says the war has killed more than 40,000 people, while aid groups believe the true toll is likely higher.

In a statement after the attack, the WHO chief called for de escalation and urged all sides to protect civilians, health workers and humanitarian staff, warning that attacks on hospitals are compounding the suffering in a country already shattered by nearly three years of war.
