U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Luttnick forecasts that India will apologize to the U.S. and seek to resolve trade issues within the next two months, following tension over energy purchases from Russia.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Luttnick recently commented on India’s trade relations with the United States, predicting that within one or two months, India would apologize and attempt to negotiate a trade deal with the U.S. regarding its recent decisions on Russian energy purchases.
Luttnick, speaking to Bloomberg, stated that India would likely come to the negotiating table and seek reconciliation. “I believe within a month or two, India will come to the table, apologize, and attempt to reach a deal with President Donald Trump,” he said.
Luttnick also issued a stern warning to India, suggesting that failure to support the U.S. could result in a 50% tariff on Indian exports to the U.S.
Earlier, Donald Trump made a post on Truth Social, commenting on the growing tension between India, Russia, and China, expressing his concern that India and Russia may be aligning against the U.S. He added that he hoped for success for all three countries.
Luttnick criticized India's actions, calling it a "bluff" and underscoring that India would eventually return to negotiating with the U.S. for business interests. He noted that India’s reluctance to open its market, discontinue Russian oil purchases, and disengage from BRICS would only harm its long-term business interests.
“If India wants to align with Russia and China, that’s their choice, but if they can’t, they should support the dollar and support the U.S.,” he stated. “Otherwise, be prepared for the 50% tariff. Let’s see how long this fight lasts.”
