Uttar Pradesh Youth Amputates Foot to Seek Disability Quota in Medical College Admission

A youth from Uttar Pradesh has gone to extreme lengths to secure a spot under the disability quota for medical college admission by amputating his own foot. Police are now investigating the matter and seeking legal advice.

In a shocking attempt to gain admission into a government medical college through the disability quota, Suraj Bhaskar, a 20-year-old from Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, amputated his own foot after failing the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) twice. His plan was to stage the incident as a violent attack, claiming he lost his foot in the assault to make himself eligible for reserved seats for disabled candidates.

The incident, which took place in Khalilpur village, came to light when Suraj's elder brother, Akash Bhaskar, informed the police on January 18, 2026, that Suraj had been attacked by "unidentified assailants" and left unconscious with a severed foot. However, upon further investigation, police discovered discrepancies in Suraj's story. Their probe revealed evidence pointing to his involvement in self-mutilation rather than a violent attack.

Authorities found a diary belonging to Suraj, where he had written, "I will become an MBBS doctor in 2026." Suraj had reportedly failed NEET twice and was under mental stress. In a desperate bid to secure admission, he devised the plan to become physically disabled by cutting off his foot and blaming the injury on an alleged attack.

Despite initially misdirecting the investigation, Suraj’s fabricated story fell apart during questioning, and the police have now shifted their focus to determining the criminal charges that may be leveled against him. Suraj is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital while police continue their investigation.
