A dedicated research institution for energy and electricity to enhance development and policy-making.

On January 7, 2026, during a meeting on the Energy and Power Sector Master Plan 2026-2050 at the Jamuna State Guest House, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasized the necessity of establishing a separate institution for electricity and energy research. He stated that this institution should not fall under the ministry's supervision but should be a strong, independent entity collaborating with global organizations and assisting the government in policy formulation.

Dr. Yunus highlighted the significance of energy and electricity for Bangladesh’s economy, asserting that it plays a critical role in shaping the nation’s progress. He pointed out the inefficiencies in the past structure and stressed the need for a new framework that ensures research is conducted systematically, without the mistakes of the past.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of researching alternative energy sources, such as offshore gas development, refining, hydrogen infrastructure, geothermal energy, and tidal-wave energy systems. The three-phase master plan covers the years 2026–2030, 2030–2040, and 2040–2050, focusing on key projects like offshore exploration, LNG security, and expanding refinery capabilities.

The government aims to enhance the country’s energy capacity to 59 gigawatts by 2050, while reducing emissions and ensuring sustainability. Recent reforms, including the cancellation of the Quick Rental Act and the introduction of Renewable Energy Policies, are part of this long-term vision. The plan requires investments of around $70–85 billion for energy and $107.25 billion for electricity sectors.
