Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing as Bangladesh and China prepare to sign up to 17 bilateral agreements covering trade, investment, infrastructure, healthcare, and regional cooperation.

Bangladesh and China are expected to strengthen their long-standing bilateral partnership as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman begins a series of high-level engagements in Beijing, highlighted by a crucial meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Thursday.

The meeting, scheduled to take place at the Great Hall of the People, is expected to focus on expanding cooperation in key sectors including trade, investment, infrastructure development, energy, healthcare, and regional connectivity. Officials familiar with the discussions indicated that both sides will also explore opportunities to elevate economic and strategic relations amid a rapidly changing global landscape.

Following the talks, Bangladesh and China may sign between 15 and 17 bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding aimed at broadening cooperation across multiple sectors. The agreements are expected to reinforce collaboration in development projects, technology transfer, investment promotion, and economic integration.

Prime Minister Rahman arrived in Beijing on Wednesday after traveling from the Chinese city of Dalian, where he attended the annual Summer Davos meeting organized by the World Economic Forum. Upon his arrival in the Chinese capital, he was accorded an official welcome, including a red-carpet reception and guard of honor.

Diplomatic sources said Bangladesh is expected to seek greater Chinese support for several major national priorities during the bilateral discussions. These include enhanced cooperation in renewable energy development, support for Bangladesh’s participation in regional economic and strategic platforms, and financing for large-scale infrastructure initiatives.

Among the projects likely to feature in discussions are the Teesta Barrage Project, the proposed Padma Barrage Project, and the expansion of specialized healthcare facilities being developed with Chinese assistance. Both countries are also expected to review the progress of ongoing cooperation projects and identify new areas for partnership.

Economic diplomacy remains a major focus of the visit. Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) has organized a major investment forum in Beijing where Prime Minister Rahman is expected to present Bangladesh’s investment opportunities, policy reforms, and incentives introduced in the latest national budget.

The forum is anticipated to attract representatives from leading Chinese corporations, technology firms, financial institutions, and manufacturing companies. Government officials hope the event will encourage increased Chinese investment in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, logistics, and technology services.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold separate meetings with senior officials of the Communist Party of China and executives from major Chinese financial institutions. These engagements are expected to focus on expanding development financing and strengthening institutional cooperation between the two countries.

The visit will continue on Friday with additional high-level meetings, including talks with senior Chinese leaders. Prime Minister Rahman is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, where discussions will cover bilateral relations as well as broader regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Analysts view the visit as one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between Bangladesh and China in recent years. As China remains one of Bangladesh’s largest trading partners and a key development partner, the outcome of the meetings could influence future cooperation in infrastructure, investment, connectivity, and economic modernization.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum gathering in Dalian, Prime Minister Rahman also held discussions with Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov. The two leaders explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral ties, expand trade and investment cooperation, and enhance collaboration in sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture, technology, and workforce development.

With multiple agreements expected and several strategic issues on the agenda, the Beijing visit is being closely watched as a potential milestone in Bangladesh-China relations, paving the way for deeper economic engagement and broader regional cooperation in the years ahead.
