Bangladesh clothing exports to USA gains big value & volume; China slips behind
The Chronify
Between January–July 2025, Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the United States rose by 21.66% year-on-year, reaching US$4.98 billion. During the same period, overall US apparel imports grew by a much lower rate 4.96% globally. In terms of quantity, the amount of Bangladeshi garments imported by the US increased by 20.33%, while the unit price of those items edged up by 1.11%.
-
China saw a drop in its apparel exports to the US: their shipments fell by about 21.01% in value and nearly 16% in quantity over the same months.
-
Other Asian competitors also showed growth, but generally less than Bangladesh:
-
Vietnam: ~16.94% growth
-
India: ~16.10%
-
Pakistan: ~11.81%
-
Indonesia: ~16.80%
-
Cambodia, even higher at ~24.45% value growth, and about 31.11% rise in number of pieces shipped.
-
Industry experts point to several reasons for Bangladesh’s strong performance:
-
Diversification away from China: Many buyers are shifting orders from China — partly due to rising costs, tariff pressures, or geopolitical factors. Bangladesh is seen as a beneficiary of that shift.
-
Competitive costs + compliance: Bangladesh continues to maintain relatively lower production costs, combined with improving standards in labour, environment, and factory compliance — making it a more attractive sourcing location.
-
Sustainability credentials: Some buyers are placing more weight on sustainability, ethical manufacturing, etc., and Bangladesh is seen to be improving in those areas.
-
Strong buyer trust: Bangladesh is increasingly viewed as reliable in terms of meeting orders, quality, timeliness, which helps especially when supply chains are disrupted elsewhere
