Bangladesh Plans Fuel Purchase System Through Mobile App

Government aims to track fuel distribution digitally amid supply concerns and illegal stockpiling.
The government of Bangladesh is developing a mobile application through which citizens will be required to purchase fuel, according to Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, adviser on information and broadcasting affairs to the Prime Minister.
Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he said the initiative aims to digitally monitor fuel distribution, including how much fuel individuals purchase and when transactions take place.
Addressing global energy challenges, Rahman noted that although many countries have already increased fuel prices, Bangladesh has not yet implemented such measures. He added that any potential price adjustment next month will depend on the prevailing global situation.
He acknowledged that while there is some pressure on fuel supply due to global conditions, the situation is not severe enough to cause long queues. Instead, illegal stockpiling and smuggling attempts have contributed to localized shortages.
The proposed app-based system is expected to enhance transparency and control, ensuring proper distribution and reducing misuse of fuel resources.
In addition, Rahman stated that although there is no electricity shortage, unregulated movement of auto-rickshaws in urban areas remains a concern due to safety issues, lack of proper fitness, and untrained drivers. The government is considering safer alternatives to these vehicles.
He also mentioned that the government will review whether any corruption occurred during the interim administration, with further action expected after restructuring the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Regarding public health, he said the current measles vaccine shortage is a result of previous administrative failures. The government has already launched vaccination programs in 30 high-risk areas and plans to begin a nationwide campaign from May 3 to control the spread of Measles.
