Government unveils major ICT expansion strategy to boost employment and global digital earnings

The government has taken a significant step toward strengthening Bangladesh’s digital economy by initiating efforts to introduce the global online payment platform PayPal in the country. The move is part of a broader strategy aimed at expanding employment opportunities through information and communication technology.

Speaking in parliament, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that approximately 200,000 freelancers will be brought under an official identification system within the next five years. The initiative is expected to formalize the rapidly growing freelancing sector and improve access to international markets.

According to the government, multiple agencies under the ICT Division are already working on skill development programs. Thousands of young individuals are set to receive training in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, and mobile application development.

Officials confirmed that around 7,500 freelancer ID cards have already been distributed, with the process ongoing. In addition, efforts are underway to expand digital services, enhance high-tech park operations, and create new avenues for employment.

A dedicated committee has also been formed to facilitate the introduction of PayPal services in Bangladesh and ensure smoother implementation of digital financial systems.

The government believes these initiatives will play a crucial role in increasing foreign earnings, supporting youth employment, and accelerating the country’s transition toward a technology-driven economy.
