Bangladesh has secured positive support from China regarding its aspiration to join BRICS, while the two countries signed 13 cooperation agreements during a high-level bilateral meeting in Beijing. The discussions also covered infrastructure development, economic cooperation, and regional partnerships.

Bangladesh has moved a step closer to strengthening its position on the global stage after receiving positive signals from China regarding its ambition to become part of the BRICS grouping. The development emerged following a bilateral meeting between the prime ministers of Bangladesh and China in Beijing on Thursday, where both sides discussed a wide range of strategic, economic, and development issues.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin said China had expressed a supportive stance toward Bangladesh’s efforts to engage more closely with BRICS. According to him, the issue was discussed during the talks, and Chinese leaders indicated that they would play a constructive and positive role regarding Bangladesh’s future involvement in the bloc.

The announcement comes at a time when Bangladesh is seeking to diversify its economic partnerships and strengthen ties with emerging global economies. BRICS, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has increasingly become an influential platform for cooperation among major developing nations. In recent years, the grouping has expanded its international outreach and attracted interest from several countries seeking closer economic and political engagement.

During the Beijing meeting, Bangladesh and China also signed 13 bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding aimed at enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors. Officials described the agreements as an important step toward deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

The signed documents are expected to cover areas such as trade, investment, infrastructure, technology, renewable energy, and development cooperation. Both sides emphasized the importance of accelerating joint projects and exploring new opportunities for collaboration that could benefit the economies of both nations.

One of the key issues discussed during the meeting was Bangladesh’s infrastructure development agenda. According to officials, China expressed its willingness to continue supporting several major projects, including initiatives related to water management and regional connectivity.

Among the topics highlighted was the Teesta Master Plan, a project that has long been viewed as a critical component of Bangladesh’s water resource management strategy. Adviser Mahdi Amin stated that China would provide technical support where necessary, beginning from the planning stage and extending to other phases of the project if required.

The leaders also exchanged views on regional economic integration, global trade dynamics, and opportunities for increased cooperation under various multilateral frameworks. Bangladesh emphasized its commitment to maintaining balanced and productive relations with all major international partners while pursuing sustainable economic growth.

Analysts believe China’s supportive position on Bangladesh’s BRICS aspirations could strengthen Dhaka’s diplomatic efforts as the country seeks greater participation in emerging international platforms. Membership or closer engagement with BRICS could potentially open new avenues for trade, investment, development financing, and technological cooperation.

The Beijing meeting forms part of a broader effort by Bangladesh to attract foreign investment, expand export markets, and establish stronger partnerships with key global economies. Chinese officials reiterated their commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development priorities and encouraging deeper cooperation between businesses and institutions from both countries.

As Bangladesh continues its economic transformation journey, the outcomes of the Beijing talks are being viewed as a significant milestone in bilateral relations. The combination of new agreements, infrastructure cooperation, and diplomatic support on international platforms reflects the growing importance of the Bangladesh-China partnership in an increasingly interconnected global environment.

Officials from both sides expressed optimism that the agreements signed during the visit would lead to tangible progress in the coming years, further strengthening economic ties and expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.
