From 2015 to 2024, the overall garment imports into the United States decreased by 5.30 percent. However, during this period, Bangladesh's garment exports to the United States increased by 26.62 percent. This information was provided by the U.S. government agency, the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA).

Compared comparatively, Bangladesh’s competitor China’s exports have decreased by 18.36 percent. In contrast, Vietnam and India’s exports have increased by 32.96 percent and 34.13 percent respectively. Indonesia’s exports declined by 19.82 percent, while Cambodia’s exports grew by 10.78 percent. Notably, Bangladesh’s export volume increased by 26.62 percent.

In terms of unit price, overall U.S. imports worldwide have decreased by 1.71 percent. China and India’s unit prices dropped by 33.80 percent and 4.56 percent respectively. On the other hand, Vietnam and Indonesia’s unit prices increased by 6.64 percent and 7.38 percent respectively, while Cambodia’s unit price rose by 38.31 percent. Bangladesh experienced a 7.30 percent increase in unit price.

Looking ahead, industry experts say Bangladesh has managed to maintain a unit price close to the global average price for the U.S. Mahyuddin Rubel, former director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said, “When we compare ourselves with our closest competitors like Vietnam and India, it becomes clear that Bangladesh has ample potential to increase its unit price further. This improvement can help increase total export earnings even without growing the export volume.”

He further added, “In 2024, China and Vietnam’s export values were nearly the same, yet Vietnam’s export volume was less than half of China’s because Vietnam exports higher-priced products.” He emphasized the need to shift focus from low-priced products toward higher-priced goods.
