National carrier moves forward with negotiations after policy approval for fleet expansion.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has approved the purchase of 14 Boeing aircraft, with formal negotiations set to begin regarding pricing and terms. This decision was made at a board meeting held on December 30, 2025, and was confirmed by Biman spokesperson Boshra Islam.

This new acquisition plan includes two Boeing 787-9s, eight Boeing 787-10s, and four Boeing 737-8s, as part of a broader agreement to expand the airline’s fleet. Biman's current fleet already includes 14 Boeing aircraft out of its 19 total.

The purchase decision comes amid ongoing negotiations over trade tariffs with the United States, as part of a broader trade arrangement between Bangladesh and Washington. The government had previously committed to acquiring 25 Boeing aircraft.

While the board has given policy-level approval, it is clarified that Biman is not bound by any financial or legal obligations until a final contract is signed.

This move has sparked increased efforts by European diplomats to promote Airbus aircraft, with discussions about acquiring 10 Airbus planes continuing since the previous government’s tenure.

Biman's expansion plans are crucial as Bangladesh's aviation market grows rapidly, and Biman faces pressure to increase its market share, currently standing at 25%.
