Can You Take a Selfie at the Polls? Election Commission Sets Guidelines
The Chronify
With smartphone selfies becoming a social trend, Bangladesh Election Commission clarifies rules for voters: mobile phones are allowed, but secrecy and ballot integrity must be maintained.
Dhaka, February 11, 2026 — As Bangladesh prepares for the historic 13th national parliamentary election on February 12, many voters are curious whether taking selfies at polling stations is allowed. The Election Commission (EC) has provided guidance balancing technological freedom with the constitutional duty to maintain ballot secrecy.
Mobile phones allowed, with conditions
Voters may bring mobile phones into polling centers. However, phones must remain switched off or on silent mode during voting. While there is no outright ban on taking photos in the polling area, any activity that disrupts voting order or compromises ballot secrecy is strictly prohibited.
Secret booth selfies strictly forbidden
According to EC regulations, taking selfies or photographing the ballot paper inside the secret voting booth is illegal. The EC emphasized:
"Protecting the secrecy of the vote is a constitutional obligation. Taking selfies with the ballot paper constitutes a clear violation of electoral conduct."
Enhanced security measures
For the first time, law enforcement officers at polling centers will be equipped with body-worn cameras, and drones will monitor the premises. While voters have some leeway in using their personal phones for communication, presiding officers have the authority to confiscate phones or remove individuals if they disrupt voting procedures.
Voter guidance
Election officials advise voters to keep phones in pockets or bags and ensure they are turned off before entering the secret booth. Remember, your inked finger is the ultimate proof of participation—not a selfie with your ballot.
This guidance aims to ensure both a safe and orderly election while allowing voters to maintain communication without compromising the secrecy and integrity of their vote.
