The Chronify

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is an annual award. It is open to citizens of Commonwealth countries who are 18 years or older. The aim of the prize is to showcase Commonwealth fiction on a global stage and to encourage new writers. Every year, the competition is held for unpublished short stories. Notably, a writer from Bangladesh was also selected as a winner from the Asia region.

This year, the 2026 Commonwealth Short Story Prize is now open for submissions. Entries can be submitted until 1 November 2025. The exact deadline depends on your own time zone, which can be checked through a separate link provided.

Participation in the competition is completely free, and citizens of any Commonwealth country aged 18 or above are eligible to enter. The prize is awarded for unpublished short stories, which must be between 2,000 and 5,000 words in length. Stories may be written in 13 languages, including Bangla, Chinese, and English.

An international panel of judges will first prepare a longlist of 25 stories. From these, winners will be selected from five regions, with one overall winner. The overall winner will receive £5,000, while each of the other regional winners will receive £2,500. All five winning stories will be published in Granta magazine.

Applications can be submitted online only. Full details of the competition are available on the Commonwealth Foundation website. For any inquiries, participants may email creatives@commonwealthfoundation.com.
