Cumilla Student Handwrites Entire Holy Quran in Eight Months, Earns Public Recognition
Suraiya Jannat, an 18-year-old madrasa student from Cumilla, has completed handwriting all 30 sections of the Holy Quran over eight months, receiving a civic honor for her dedication and perseverance.
An 18-year-old student from Cumilla has been recognized for an extraordinary display of dedication after hand-copying the entire Holy Quran in just eight months. Suraiya Jannat, a second-year Alim student at Mudafarganj A.U. Fazil Degree Madrasa in Laksam Upazila, completed all 30 parts of the sacred text by hand, producing a manuscript praised for its precision and visual excellence.
The achievement has drawn admiration from educators, local officials, and residents, who described it as a remarkable example of patience, discipline, and devotion. According to those who viewed the manuscript, the handwriting is so neat and consistent that it closely resembles professionally printed text.
In recognition of her accomplishment, Suraiya was presented with a commemorative medal and a crest during a reception organized by the Kandirpar Union Parishad on Thursday.
The ceremony was attended by several government officials and community leaders, including Chattogram Divisional Deputy Director of Local Government Rasheda Akter, Laksam Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nargis Sultana, Acting Union Parishad Chairman Nur Islam, and other local representatives.
Suraiya is the daughter of expatriate Nur Hossain Liton, who works in Saudi Arabia, and Jannatul Ferdous. The family hails from Chandgaon village in Kandirpar Union under Laksam Upazila.
Speaking about her journey, Suraiya said she undertook the project as an act of faith and devotion, inspired by the efforts made throughout Islamic history to preserve the Holy Quran. She explained that she wanted to spend her free time in a meaningful way by writing the sacred text herself while seeking the pleasure of Allah and spiritual reward.
She began the work on January 1, 2025, and completed it at the end of August the same year. Throughout the process, she balanced the demanding project with her regular madrasa studies, dedicating her spare time to writing without allowing it to interfere with her academic responsibilities.
According to Suraiya, completing the handwritten Quran required 611 pages and approximately 55 pens. She also maintained a personal routine before each writing session, performing ablution and reciting Durood Sharif before putting pen to paper, believing the practice helped her remain focused and brought blessings to her work.
Looking ahead, she expressed a desire to undertake another ambitious project by handwriting the renowned Hadith collection Sahih al-Bukhari. She requested prayers from the public so that she may successfully complete that goal in the future.
Suraiya also credited her younger brother, Nahid Hasan, a tenth-grade student at Abednagar Dakhil Madrasa, for providing constant encouragement throughout the months-long effort.
Her mother, Jannatul Ferdous, said her daughter had shown a deep interest in Arabic language and calligraphy from an early age. She described the completion of the handwritten Quran as a proud moment for the entire family, noting that Suraiya's father rewarded her with Tk100,000 after learning of her achievement.
Officials attending the recognition ceremony praised the student's perseverance and commitment. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nargis Sultana described the accomplishment as an exceptional milestone for someone of Suraiya's age, saying the quality of the handwriting resembled printed script and reflected extraordinary patience and concentration.
She added that achievements of this nature can inspire young people to engage in creative, meaningful, and positive pursuits while preserving important religious and cultural traditions.
Community members also welcomed the recognition, saying Suraiya's story demonstrates how dedication and disciplined use of time can produce remarkable accomplishments. Her handwritten copy of the Holy Quran is expected to remain a cherished personal and family treasure, symbolizing months of careful effort, devotion, and commitment to preserving the sacred text through traditional handwritten calligraphy.
