The Chronify

The price of gold fluctuates daily in the global market. However, in the domestic market, the price of gold continues to rise. The price of one tola of gold in the country has even exceeded two lakh taka. In this situation, bringing gold from abroad could be one of the main options. However, it is important to know the exact amount of gold and jewelry that can be brought in duty-free.

Along with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, travelers returning from the Middle East and other countries can bring gold jewelry into the country duty-free. There is also an opportunity to bring gold bars into the country by paying a specified amount of duty.

Under the non-tourist passenger baggage rules, the allowance for bringing gold jewelry, gold bars, and mobile phones has been increased from the current fiscal year. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued this regulation during the budget announcement.

According to the new baggage rules (Non-tourist Passenger Baggage Rules, 2025), any passenger returning from abroad can bring up to 100 grams of gold jewelry per year duty-free. That means even if you bring approximately 8 tola 10 anna of gold jewelry, no duty will be charged. Similarly, the limit for silver jewelry is set at 200 grams. However, whether gold or silver, no more than 12 pieces of the same type of jewelry can be brought.

Additionally, under the new rules, a passenger can bring one gold bar weighing up to 10 tola per year by paying a duty of BDT 5,000 per tola.

How to bring them

Upon arrival in Bangladesh, passengers must fill out a form called the Baggage Declaration Form. This form requires details such as the passenger’s name, passport number, flight number, nationality, and the country they are arriving from. If there are any dutiable items, their details must also be provided.

However, if a passenger is carrying less than 100 grams of gold jewelry or 200 grams of silver jewelry, filling out this form is not necessary. For amounts exceeding the allowed limit, duty must be paid on the excess portion.

According to the baggage rules, passengers carrying items that are duty-exempt can proceed through the Green Channel and leave the airport directly.
