Shooting Near Bashundhara City Leaves One Dead, Another Injured Amid Tensions
Azizur Rahman Musabbir, the former general secretary of the Dhaka North unit of BNP’s Swechchhasebak Dal, was shot dead by unidentified assailants near the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex in Dhaka on the night of January 7, 2026. The attack also left Abu Sufian, a Jubo Dal activist and the general secretary of the Tejgaon Thana Van Workers' Union, critically injured.
The shooting occurred around 8:40 pm behind the complex near Tejturi Bazar on Kazipara-Green Road. According to Fazlul Karim, the additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the assailants fired five rounds at Musabbir, hitting him in the abdomen. He succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Panthapath, while Sufian was initially treated at BRB Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The incident prompted a protest by Jubo Dal leaders and activists around 10 pm, as they blocked the Karwan Bazar intersection in response to the killing. Local residents recalled Musabbir as an active figure in BNP’s activities, with some noting his long history as an activist in the area.
The police have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and motives behind the shooting.
