The fire at the Materbari coal-based power plant’s scrap yard in Cox’s Bazar continues to rage, despite efforts by six firefighting units.
A massive fire broke out at the scrap yard of the Materbari coal-based power plant in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, on the night of January 12, 2026, at around 8 PM. Despite the efforts of six fire service units, the fire has not yet been brought under control even after four hours of work. Firefighters are continuing to work diligently to contain the blaze.
Immediately after the fire was reported, two fire service units from the plant began efforts to control the flames. Given the severity of the situation, additional fire service units were sent from nearby areas. However, the fire has not been fully contained as of the latest update.
Saluddin Kader, Station Leader of Maheshkhali Fire Service, stated that two units from Maheshkhali and two from Chakaria reached the site by 9:50 PM, working together to control the fire. A total of six units are currently involved in the firefighting efforts.
Saluddin explained that the fire has been difficult to control due to the materials present in the scrap yard, including cotton, dry wood, and large piles of plastic, which are fueling the flames.
Regarding the origin of the fire, Saluddin indicated that initial reports suggest the involvement of street children in the area, who are suspected to have started the fire.
Maheshkhali Upazila Executive Officer Imran Mahmud Dalim confirmed the incident but mentioned that the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
