A four-year-old child who fell into an abandoned hole dug for a government deep tube well in Raozan was recovered dead on Wednesday evening following a four-hour rescue operation.

The child, Mezbah Uddin, went missing around 4:30pm after falling into the uncovered hole in Joynagar village under Kadulpur union. Fire Service personnel recovered him at around 8:30pm and rushed him to the Raozan Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Mezbah was the son of day labourer Saiful Islam. According to family members and local residents, the deep tube well hole had been dug four to five years ago as part of a government project, about 30–40 feet from their house, but the tube well was never installed and the hole was left uncovered.

Fire Service officials said the child fell at least 20 feet into the hole while playing in the afternoon. During the rescue operation, firefighters located the child underground, supplied oxygen and worked with the help of local residents.

Raozan Fire Service Station In-Charge Shamsul Alam said the child was rescued after four hours but was already dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Sajedul Islam said locals initially heard the child crying from inside the hole and immediately alerted the Fire Service and police.

A similar tragedy occurred on December 10 last year in Tanore, where a two-year-old child fell into an abandoned deep tube well hole and was recovered dead after about 32 hours.
