Major healthcare expansion plan announced to improve medical access across the country
The government has announced a large-scale initiative to transform 200 unused multi-storey buildings under the Local Government Division (LGD) into hospitals and maternal care clinics, according to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The announcement was made during a parliamentary question-and-answer session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, where the Prime Minister outlined plans to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
Under the plan, the unused buildings will be transferred to the Ministry of Health and converted into functional medical facilities within a short timeframe. Authorities said the initiative aims to expand healthcare services, particularly for women and children, and bring medical treatment closer to communities.
Officials added that several of the facilities are expected to become operational within the next two months, depending on renovation and staffing progress.
Alongside the healthcare expansion plan, the Prime Minister also highlighted ongoing immunization efforts, including a nationwide measles vaccination campaign targeting millions of children.
The government further reiterated its broader focus on agricultural development, food security, and climate-resilient farming policies as part of its long-term economic and social development strategy.
