A proposed project for the haor areas in eight districts of the country, including Kishoreganj, has been postponed. This project, aimed at climate-resilient livelihood improvement, was proposed by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives.
On Tuesday (October 21), the project was postponed during a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
The project’s estimated cost was BDT 12.688 billion, including BDT 3.05 billion from government funds, BDT 8.51 billion as IFAD loans, and BDT 1.098 billion in DANIDA grants.
When the project was presented to ECNEC, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Forest and Environment Advisor, raised objections. She stated that infrastructure cannot be constructed in the haor areas at the expense of the environment. Consequently, the project was not approved and was postponed. ECNEC has requested a revision of the DPP, excluding the infrastructure construction component in the haor areas.
