Hasina can be brought back to the country in two ways

Last year, in a case concerning crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced the ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. Another accused in the case, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, was also sentenced to death. Currently, both of them are fugitives in the neighboring country, India.
Bangladesh’s government can bring the fugitive convicts back and enforce their sentences in two ways, according to Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam.
Speaking to reporters at the court premises on Monday afternoon, he explained that the state can take two steps to repatriate the fugitives. The first is through the 2013 Extradition Treaty with India. Since both convicts have been sentenced for crimes against humanity, Bangladesh can formally request India to hand them over. If India respects the rule of law and justice, it is expected to return the accused.
The second method is through Interpol. As the tribunal has already issued the death sentences via a competent court, Bangladesh can utilize these two avenues to bring them back and execute the punishment.
The Chief Prosecutor expressed confidence that the Ministries of Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs would jointly take the necessary measures. He also emphasized that Bangladesh has successfully conducted trials for complex crimes like crimes against humanity while maintaining all international norms and standards.
He further stated that if the evidence presented in the tribunal were submitted to any court in the world, the accused would receive the same punishment.
Additionally, the tribunal sentenced former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun to five years in prison as a state witness. The verdict also orders the confiscation of Sheikh Hasina’s and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal’s properties, to be used for the families of those killed during the July uprising.
