Naval Transport Adviser Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain said, “Where would I go? I am here, my entire family is here. If I die, I will die here. Where could I run?”

In response to journalists’ questions about protesters’ allegations that the “irresponsible” advisers of the caretaker government would flee the country after leasing various facilities of Chittagong Port to foreigners, the Naval Transport Adviser made the following remarks.

He said that those entrusted with the management of the port are neither his relatives nor his acquaintances. “I want the country to move forward. Whatever agreements are made with foreigners, or development plans are adopted, it is all done in the interest of the country,” he added.

On Monday, the Naval Transport Adviser inaugurated terminals and yards of three ongoing projects at Chittagong Port and inspected several port sheds.

After the inaugurations, he briefed journalists on the government’s position and objectives on various matters.

Regarding the much-discussed issue of increased tariffs, the adviser said that since the matter is now in court, he does not wish to comment. The Chittagong Port Authority implemented a 41 percent tariff increase in the service sector. Despite businesspeople’s demands and protests, no attention was paid, prompting users to approach the High Court. On Sunday, the High Court suspended the increased fees for one month.

The Naval Transport Adviser inaugurated the construction work of the container yard at Patenga’s Laldia Char, the transport terminal at Halishahar Bay Terminal on the coast of the Bay of Bengal, and the container yard at Taltala. He also inspected the port’s X-Y Shed and Customs Auction Shed.
