New Delhi confirms it is examining legal request amid ongoing diplomatic engagement with Dhaka
India has confirmed that it is reviewing a formal request from Bangladesh seeking the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a weekly briefing that the request is being examined as part of India’s judicial and legal procedures. He added that New Delhi will continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders on the matter.
The extradition request was reportedly raised by Bangladesh’s foreign minister Khalilur Rahman during a recent meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi.
Hasina, the former prime minister of Bangladesh, has been sentenced to death by the country’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), according to reports. The request marks a significant development in diplomatic relations between the two neighbours.
India also stated that it is closely monitoring political developments in Bangladesh, including discussions around parliamentary actions involving the Awami League under the current interim administration led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Officials in New Delhi emphasized that bilateral ties remain a priority, with both sides agreeing to explore ways to strengthen cooperation through existing diplomatic mechanisms. Further follow-up meetings between the two countries are expected in the coming weeks.
