On February 6, 2026, the interim government released a statement addressing the protests over the Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi murder case and the government's stance on maintaining law and order ahead of the upcoming elections.
On the afternoon of February 5, 2026, a protest demanding justice for the murder of Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi began in front of the Jamuna State Guesthouse under the banner of the Inquilab Platform. Despite a ban on protests in the Jamuna area, law enforcement initially refrained from using force. However, when the protesters attempted to break through barricades and even climbed onto water cannons, law enforcement deployed sound grenades and water cannons to control the situation.
The government has clarified that no firearms were used during the incident, and the police acted in accordance with the law to disperse the protestors. According to emergency department doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, a total of 23 people, including Inquilab Platform's member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, received medical treatment for injuries. However, none of the individuals had gunshot wounds.
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice in the Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi case and mentioned that it is reviewing the legal aspects of conducting an investigation under the United Nations' oversight. A formal letter will be sent to the relevant UN bodies on Sunday, February 8, 2026.
The government also responded to claims of excessive force during the protests, stating that such allegations were false. In light of the upcoming elections, the government urged citizens to remain patient, restrained, and responsible. The election, which is eagerly awaited by the country's 180 million citizens, is drawing attention from the international community, with foreign journalists and observers already in Bangladesh.
The government called on all citizens to ensure a peaceful, inclusive, and participatory election. They emphasized the importance of conducting the election in a fair and unbiased manner, which is seen as a crucial milestone for the country's democratic journey.
The statement concluded by stressing that any deviation from the goal of a free, fair, and peaceful election would not be acceptable. The government believes that the collective responsible behavior of all citizens will ensure the success of a democratic election, marking a significant moment in the country's progress and stability.
