Dhaka court orders the detention of journalist Anis Alamgir following a five-day remand in an anti-terrorism case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

On Saturday, December 20, 2025, journalist Anis Alamgir was sent to jail after completing a five-day police remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Uttara West Police Station. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat issued the order following his appearance in court.

Prosecution Sub-Inspector Shamim Hossain informed the court that Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Kazi Shahnewaz had requested judicial custody for Alamgir. The police noted that several important pieces of information had been gathered during Alamgir’s interrogation, and verification of these details was ongoing. They also mentioned that a further remand might be requested if necessary.

During the hearing, Alamgir’s defense lawyers, including Naznin Nahar, requested divisional facilities for him. After considering both sides, the court directed the prison authorities to follow jail regulations regarding his treatment.

According to case details, Anis Alamgir was picked up by the Detective Branch team on December 14, 2025, for questioning and later taken to the DB office. That night, a case was filed against him by Arian Ahmed, a member of the “July Revolutionary Alliance.” The charges allege that Alamgir and three others conspired to destabilize the state and were involved in activities aimed at inciting a banned organization.

Other accused individuals in the case include actress Meher Afroz Shaon, fashion model Maria Kispotta, and television presenter Imtu Ratish Imtiaz. The court had granted a five-day remand for Alamgir the following day.
