Joy & Putul get 5 years in plot corruption case

In the plot allocation corruption case of Dhaka's Purbachal New Town project, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, have been sentenced to 5 years in prison.

Judge Md. Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka’s 5th Special Judge Court announced the verdict on Thursday afternoon.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy was sentenced to 5 years in one case, along with a fine of 100,000 taka.
 

In another case, Saima Wazed Putul was also sentenced to 5 years in prison.

The arguments from both the prosecution and defense concluded on 23 November, after which the court scheduled the verdict, which was delivered today.


The case alleges that Sheikh Hasina, using her position as Prime Minister, obtained a plot at Sudhasadana in Dhanmondi registered in the name of her husband, Wazed Miah, by concealing information, submitting false affidavits, and violating RAJUK regulations. It is also alleged that she provided financial benefits to officials of RAJUK and the Ministry of Public Works to secure the plot.

 

In the three cases, aside from Sheikh Hasina, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and Saima Wazed Putul, there are 20 other accused: former State Minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed; former Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Purabi Goldar; former RAJUK Chairman Md. Anisur Rahman Miah; former Member (Development Control) Shafiul Haq; former Member (Estate & Land) Mohammad Khurshid Alam; former Member (Planning) Mohammad Nasir Uddin; Major (Eng.) Samsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury; former RAJUK Deputy Director (Estate & Land-3) Nayeb Ali Sharif; Administrative Officer Saiful Islam Sarkar; Additional Secretary (Administration) Kazi Washi Uddin; former Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Shahid Ulla Khandakar; Member (Administration & Finance) Kabir Al Asad; Member (Development Control) Tanmoy Das; Member (Estate & Land) Md. Nurul Islam; former Member (Planning) Mohammad Nasir Uddin; Director (Estate & Land-2) Sheikh Shahinul Islam; Director (Estate & Land-3) Md. Kamrul Islam; Deputy Director Md. Hafizur Rahman; Deputy Director Habibur Rahman; and former Personal Secretary to the Prime Minister Mohammad Salauddin.
 

Among the accused, only Mohammad Khurshid Alam has been arrested. On 31 July, Judge Abdullah Al Mamun framed charges against the accused in all three cases and ordered the start of trial. During the proceedings, the court recorded testimonies of 28 witnesses, with the final testimonies in the three separate cases concluded on 17 November.
