Massive Fire Breaks Out at Materbari Power Plant’s Scrap Yard
A massive fire has broken out at the scrap yard of the Materbari coal-based power plant in Maheshkhali, Cox's Bazar. Firefighting teams are still working to control the blaze.
A severe fire erupted at the scrap yard of the Materbari coal-based power plant in Maheshkhali, Cox's Bazar, on the night of January 12, 2026, around 8 PM.
Following the incident, a unit from the Fire Service was immediately deployed to bring the fire under control. Given the seriousness of the situation, multiple fire service units from nearby areas were also dispatched to the site. As of the latest reports, the fire has not yet been fully contained.
Dolon Acharya, Senior Station Officer of Cox’s Bazar Fire Service, confirmed that the fire broke out at the power plant's scrap yard. Upon receiving the news, fire units from Maheshkhali and Chakaria were sent to the site.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and efforts to contact plant officials for a statement have been unsuccessful, as they have not answered calls.
Maheshkhali Upazila Executive Officer Imran Mahmud Dalim has confirmed the incident and added that fire service units from Maheshkhali have reached the site and are actively working to control the flames. He also mentioned that he was en route to the plant to assess the situation.
