No Casualties Reported as Fire Services Contain Blaze After Two-Hour Effort
A devastating fire broke out in the Rohingya camp in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, destroying over 50 houses on Sunday (28 December) night. However, no casualties have been reported. The fire reportedly began from a mobile phone charger explosion, though investigations are still ongoing.
The blaze started around 10:30 PM in the 24-25 sectors of the Leda and Alikhali Rohingya camps in Hnila Union. Fire service units from Cox's Bazar worked for nearly two hours to bring the fire under control by 12:30 AM.
According to Syed Mohammad Morshed Hossain, Assistant Director of the Fire Service in Cox's Bazar, the fire spread quickly due to the materials used in the construction of the houses, primarily tarpaulin and bamboo. Despite this, the fire was contained within two hours of their arrival at the scene.
Leda Camp Development Committee President Mohammad Alam and local resident Syed Alam both speculated that the fire may have originated from a mobile phone charger explosion in the house of Fatima Akter.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by the residents in these makeshift shelters. The cause of the fire, the extent of the damage, and further investigations are awaited.
