Estimates Suggest 1.6 Million to 3.2 Million Mourners Gather for Janaza
The funeral prayers for former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia were held on Wednesday afternoon after 3:00 PM at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Complex in Dhaka, attracting an unprecedented number of mourners. According to an independent estimate by The Descent, the crowd size ranged between 1.6 million and 3.2 million people, based on crowd density and area occupied during the janaza.
Reports from national media outlets, including Prothom Alo, Samakal, and Ekhon TV, confirmed that mourners extended far beyond the prayer ground, filling major roads such as Manik Mia Avenue, Farmgate–Karwan Bazar, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Asad Gate, and the area surrounding the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Center.
Using data from Google Maps, it was estimated that the roads occupied by participants covered a total length of 13.04 kilometers, with an average width of 24 meters, totaling approximately 312,960 square meters of road space. The two prayer grounds at the South Plaza measured 87,636 square meters.
Professor Dr. Aminul Haque from Dhaka University’s Department of Population Sciences stated that gatherings of this scale typically accommodate about four people per square meter. However, during this exceptional event, the density ranged between six and eight people per square meter, indicating the extraordinary turnout.
