Beggum Khaleda Zia’s Janaza Concludes with Emotional Scene at Manik Mia Avenue
The Namaz-e-Janaza of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was completed with great respect today at Manik Mia Avenue, Dhaka. The Janaza ceremony took place at 3:03 PM, led by Mufti Abdul Malek, the Imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
After the prayer, an emotional scene unfolded as Maulana Mizanur Rahman Azhari, a popular Islamic preacher, and Maulana Muhammad Mamunul Haque, Amir of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, lifted Begum Zia’s coffin. The poignant moment, where they walked shoulder-to-shoulder carrying the coffin of their beloved leader, deeply resonated with the crowd, amplifying the sorrow among the thousands gathered.
In addition to political figures like President Mohammad Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, prominent leaders from various political parties, foreign diplomats, and distinguished guests attended the Janaza. Before the prayer, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan shared memories of the late leader, emphasizing her essential role in the country's politics.
Her son, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, also spoke, offering prayers for his mother and asking for prayers for her to be granted peace in the afterlife.
The funeral was attended by millions from across the country, with crowds spilling over to areas like Khamarbari, Asad Gate, and Farmgate, making the event one of the most significant in recent memory.
Begum Khaleda Zia had been under intensive care at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka since November 23. Despite her critical condition, she passed away on the morning of December 30 at the age of 80.
