Medical & dental admission rules released with mark cuts

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council has released the 2025–2026 admission policy for MBBS and BDS courses in medical and dental colleges/units, with some amendments.

For applicants who passed SSC and HSC (or equivalent) from the science stream, the required GPA has been lowered. Changes have also been made to mark deductions for candidates who passed HSC in previous years and for students previously admitted to government medical, dental colleges, or dental units. In the exam subjects, Physics marks decreased by 5, while 5 marks were added to General Knowledge.
 

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has published this policy on its website. It is titled “Admission Policy for MBBS/BDS Courses in Medical/Dental Colleges – 2025–2026.”

The policy, drafted by BMDC, will apply to all government and private medical and dental colleges and dental units in Bangladesh from the 2025–26 academic year for admission to MBBS and BDS courses.

 

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants:

  1. Citizenship:

    • Applicants must be citizens of Bangladesh.

    • Only foreign students can apply for seats reserved by the government for international candidates.

  2. Academic Requirements (Science Stream):

    • Must have passed both SSC and HSC (or equivalent) examinations in the science stream.

    • Total GPA for both exams must be at least 8.5 (previously 9.0 in 2024–25).

    • Must have passed SSC or equivalent “O” level in the science stream.

    • In HSC or equivalent “A” level, minimum GPA of 3.5 in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology is required.

  3. Foreign Students – Government Medical/Dental Colleges & Units:

    • Total GPA of 8.5 on a 5‑point scale in SSC and HSC/A level.

    • Minimum GPA of 3.5 in Biology.

    • No single exam GPA can be below 4.0.

  4. Foreign Students – Private Medical/Dental Colleges & Units:

    • Total GPA of 7.0 in SSC (or equivalent 10th grade/O level) and HSC (or equivalent A level).

    • Minimum GPA of 3.5 in Biology.

    • No single exam GPA can be below 3.5.

  5. Backward Communities (Indigenous & Hill District Non‑Tribal Candidates):

    • Total GPA of at least 8.0 in SSC and HSC (or equivalent).

                    No single exam GPA can be below 3.5.

                   Minimum GPA of 3.5 in Biology is required.

  • Applicants must have passed HSC or equivalent in the current English year or the previous English year for which they are applying for medical, dental, or dental unit admission.

  • The SSC or equivalent exam must have been passed within the three academic years preceding the HSC or equivalent exam.

  • Example:

  • For the 2025–26 academic year admission test, candidates must have passed HSC or equivalent in 2024 or 2025.

  • Candidates who passed SSC or equivalent before 2022 are ineligible to apply.

  • Candidates who completed O Level, A Level, or equivalent foreign education must have their transcripts equivalated by the Directorate General of Health Services.

     

    Selection Process of Applicants:

  • The total GPA obtained in SSC and HSC (or equivalent) examinations will be calculated out of 100 marks.

  • Student selection will be based on a merit list prepared using SSC and HSC GPAs along with marks obtained in the national admission test.

  • Merit Calculation for Fresh HSC Graduates:

  • Merit score = (SSC GPA × 8) + (HSC GPA × 12) + Admission Test Marks.

     

  • Mark Deductions:

  • For candidates who passed HSC in previous years, 3 marks will be deducted from the total score.

  • For candidates previously admitted to government medical, dental colleges, or dental units, 5 marks will be deducted.

  • In the previous academic year (2024–25), 6 marks were deducted from the total score for previous-year candidates.

     

    Admission Test Marks Distribution and Duration:

  • The written admission test will consist of 100 questions, each worth 1 mark, for a total of 100 marks based on the HSC or equivalent syllabus.

  • Marks distribution:

    • Physics: 15 marks

    • Chemistry: 25 marks

    • Biology: 30 marks

    • English: 15 marks

    • General Knowledge: 15 marks

  • Negative marking: 0.25 marks will be deducted for each incorrect answer.

  • Candidates scoring less than 40 marks in the written test will be considered ineligible for admission.

  • Duration of the test: 1 hour 15 minutes.
