Mongla Port is being transformed into a ‘transit gateway’.

Officials of the Mongla Port Authority (MPA) have stated that the port’s Pilotage and Reception Facility (PRF) project is awaiting inauguration, which will enhance the ability to collect and remove oil from ships while helping to protect riverine and marine biodiversity.
 

Known as the economic lifeline of the southwest region, Mongla Port plays a crucial role in importing a variety of goods including food grains, cement clinker, fertilizers, vehicles, machinery, coal, and LPG, as well as exporting frozen fish, shrimp, crabs, jute, and jute products.
 

Md. Makruzzaman, Senior Deputy Director (Public Relations) of MPA, said that in the 2024-25 fiscal year, the port surpassed its operational and financial targets, achieving historic success. Against an annual cargo handling target of 8.88 million metric tons, 10.412 million metric tons were handled, 17.25% higher than the target. Similarly, against a target of 20,000 TEU containers, 21,456 TEU containers were handled. During this period, the port’s revenue also exceeded the target.
 

Against a revenue target of BDT 33.387 billion, income reached BDT 34.33 billion. The most remarkable progress was in net profit, which surpassed the target of BDT 2.046 billion, reaching BDT 6.21 billion-a massive increase of 203.49%.
 

Officials also noted that with modern equipment, more than 24 containers can now be handled per hour, and with regular dredging ensuring navigability, five ships can be managed simultaneously across five jetties. In the first five months of the current fiscal year alone, the port handled 356 ships, 13,854 TEU containers, 4,139 vehicles, and 4.4 million tons of import-export cargo.
