A recent study shows nearly 61 lakh cannabis users in Bangladesh, contributing to a growing drug addiction problem among the youth.

A national research report has revealed that there are approximately 82 lakh drug users in Bangladesh, making up about 4.88% of the country's population. The majority of these users, nearly 61 lakh, are cannabis consumers. Other substances like yaba, alcohol, cough syrup, and heroin are also prevalent across the nation.

The study, conducted by Bangladesh Medical University in collaboration with Research and Management Consultants Limited, was supervised by the Department of Narcotics Control. It spanned from February to June 2025, collecting data from 13 districts and 26 sub-districts across all eight divisions of the country.

The research highlighted that the highest rates of drug use were in the divisions of Mymensingh (6.02%), Rangpur (6.00%), and Chattogram (5.50%). Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of drug users, with about 2.29 million people affected.

One of the key findings was that most drug users are young. 33% of users began their substance use between the ages of 8-17, and 59% started between 18-25 years old. The increase in drug use is attributed to various social factors such as unemployment, family instability, and mental stress. Nearly 90% of users reported that drugs are easily accessible.

The study also revealed that only 13% of drug users have had access to treatment or rehabilitation services. A significant 69% of users expressed a need for medical treatment, and 62% sought counseling services.

Professor Dr. Mohammad Shahinul Alam, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, stated that the drug problem is not just a law-and-order issue but a complex public health and social challenge. He emphasized the need for political commitment and research-based solutions.

The Director-General of the Department of Narcotics Control, Md. Hasan Maruf, mentioned that the risk of drug addiction among the population is increasing. The government has approved the establishment of 200-bed rehabilitation centers in seven divisions. He emphasized that eradicating drugs will require family involvement and social movements.

The findings of this study are expected to serve as valuable information for developing national drug policies and actions.
