New transport rates take effect nationwide as government adjusts fares amid rising fuel costs
The government has increased bus fares by 11 paisa per kilometer, with the revised rates coming into effect from Thursday, according to Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam.
The announcement was made during a discussion meeting held at the Secretariat, where officials cited rising fuel prices as the primary reason behind the adjustment. Authorities said the fare revision aims to balance operational costs for transport operators while maintaining service continuity.
Under the updated structure, long-distance buses will now operate at a government-fixed rate of Tk 2.12 per kilometer. In metropolitan areas such as Dhaka and Chattogram, fares have been set at Tk 2.42 per kilometer for buses and Tk 2.32 per kilometer for minibuses.
Officials also indicated that fares could be reduced if fuel prices decline in the future, suggesting that the current adjustment is subject to market conditions.
The decision is expected to have a direct impact on daily commuters, as public transport remains a primary mode of travel for millions across the country.
