Posters banned during election campaign
The Chronify
For the first time, the Election Commission (EC) has completely banned the use of posters during election campaigns. At the same time, strict prohibitions have been imposed on the use of drones and conducting campaigns abroad.
On Monday night (November 11), the Election Commission (EC) published new regulations in the form of a gazette. These regulations have been formulated in line with the recommendations of the Election System Reform Commission and in coordination with the 2008 Code of Conduct.
According to the regulations, the use of posters in election campaigns has been completely banned to prevent environmental pollution and control expenses. In addition, no candidate can use more than 20 billboards, banners, or festoons.
The EC stated, “The use of drones and conducting campaigns abroad will be completely prohibited.”
The new regulations also impose strict controls on social media. Using artificial intelligence (AI) for campaigning with malicious intent is entirely banned.
From now on, candidates must submit a pledge to comply with the Code of Conduct to the EC. Additionally, for the first time, all candidates must announce their election manifestos on the same stage.
Strict penalties have been established for violations of the regulations. Any candidate who violates the Code of Conduct may face up to six months’ imprisonment and a fine of 150,000 BDT. Political parties may also be fined 150,000 BDT. In cases of serious violations, the EC has been granted the authority to cancel a candidate’s nomination after investigation.
