Press Secretary cites 15½ months of government achievements

The Chronify

In response to social media criticism of the interim government, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam highlighted its successes over the past 15½ months in a Facebook post on 18 November.

In a Facebook post on 18 November, Shafiqul Alam responded to criticisms calling the interim government weak and ineffective. He acknowledged that many viewed it as the “weakest administration in Bangladesh’s history,” failing to control over 1,700 protests in 500 days, struggling with lawmaking and implementation, and yielding to small or unknown groups. Yet, he argued the government achieved unprecedented results in just 15½ months:

  • Restored peace and stability; post-revolutionary retaliatory attacks ceased.

  • Completed a U.S. tariff agreement without a lobbying firm.

  • Passed a record number of laws, including major labor reforms.

  • Established a historic political consensus through the July Charter, enabling long-term democratic transformation.

  • Strengthened Supreme Court oversight over lower courts to prevent misuse of bail or politically motivated cases.

  • Secured the Laldiya Terminal contract with a top global port operator the largest European investment in Bangladesh’s production sector.

  • Positioned Bangladesh in the Indo-Pacific through a new foreign policy framework.

  • Stabilized the economy: banking sector theft reduced, currency stabilized, and food inflation cut from 14% to 7%.

  • Initiated accountability for past abuses, curtailed enforced disappearances, and checked extremist political culture of the Awami League.

  • Ensured RAB operates under law, intelligence agencies ceased harassing dissenters.

  • Media freedom and freedom of expression restored; no “crossfire” incidents reported in 16 months.

Shafiqul Alam concluded that no other Bangladeshi government had achieved as much in such a short period as this interim government.
