Responding to questions about discrepancies in his election affidavit, Sarjis said the Returning Officer had declared his nomination valid after reviewing the required information.
National Citizen Party Chief Organiser for the northern region Sarjis Alam said he is open to scrutiny by relevant authorities and would accept legal consequences if any corruption allegation against him is proven through lawful investigation.
“Bangladesh has several institutions mandated to investigate corruption. If any inquiry conducted within the law establishes even a minor allegation against me over the last one and a half years, I will accept the legal process with respect,” he said.
Sarjis made the remarks while speaking at a press conference at the NCP district office in the Lichutala area of Panchagarh yesterday afternoon.
He expressed concern over what he described as misleading and politically motivated information circulating about him on social media, urging the government and the Election Commission to take action against disinformation, particularly during the election period.
Sarjis said such content could confuse voters and erode public confidence in the electoral process. Preventing the spread of misinformation, he added, is essential to ensuring a fair and credible election.
Responding to questions about discrepancies in his election affidavit, Sarjis said the Returning Officer had declared his nomination valid after reviewing the required information.
He explained that an incorrect figure appeared in his income tax return due to an unintentional typing error, which has since been corrected through proper legal procedures.
Addressing another allegation circulating online, Sarjis rejected claims linking him to the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League, saying he never held any position in the organisation at any stage of his political career.
Reflecting on his political journey, Sarjis said he has often faced misunderstanding because of his critical stance on various political issues. Despite such challenges, he said, he and his party remained committed to their principles and organisational work.
He also raised concern over reports of pressure and intimidation faced by some NCP activists in certain areas, calling on all political actors to show restraint and uphold democratic norms to ensure a peaceful election environment.
Urging authorities to remain vigilant, Sarjis called on the government and the Election Commission to closely monitor the situation and take necessary steps to maintain fairness in the electoral process.
Speaking to journalists, he said he expects the media to uphold balance and professionalism ahead of the polls. Responsible journalism, he added, plays a crucial role in strengthening democracy and ensuring an inclusive and credible election.
