Solar Power Surge: Teesta Plant Adds Up to 1,200MW Daily Without Fuel

Massive solar plant in Gaibandha delivers fuel-free electricity, easing pressure on national grid and cutting energy costs.

A major renewable energy milestone is unfolding in Bangladesh, as the country’s largest solar power facility, Teesta Solar Limited, is generating between 1,000 and 1,200 megawatts of electricity daily without using any fuel.

Located in the char areas of Sundarganj in Gaibandha, along the Teesta River, the plant has transformed once barren land into a hub of clean energy production. With a capacity of around 200 megawatts per hour, the project is playing a growing role in addressing the country’s electricity demand.

Officials say the plant has produced over one million megawatt-hours of electricity in the past three years, with an estimated market value of around Tk 1,000 crore. Compared to diesel-based generation, the same output would have cost nearly three times more.

Project insiders highlight that while initial setup costs are relatively high, maintenance expenses remain low, making solar energy a cost-effective long-term solution. Experts also point out that Bangladesh has the potential to generate up to 50,000 megawatts of solar power annually.

Despite this potential, renewable energy currently accounts for only about 3% of the country’s electricity mix. Analysts believe expanding solar projects, including rooftop installations and infrastructure-based panels, could significantly reduce dependence on imported fuels.

The government has set a target to produce 10,000 megawatts of solar power by 2030, with projects like Teesta Solar Limited expected to play a crucial role in achieving that goal.
