In the Purbachal New Town project plot allocation corruption case by the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK), the court sentenced British MP Tulip Siddiq to 2 years, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to 5 years, and her sister Sheikh Rehana to 7 years in prison.

In addition to the prison sentences, Tulip Siddiq has been fined BDT 100,000, with six months of imprisonment in default, and Sheikh Rehana has also been fined BDT 100,000. The remaining 14 accused in the case were sentenced to five years each.

The verdict in this case was announced on Monday (1 December) at 11 a.m. by Judge Md. Robiul Alam of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-4. The sentences were given in the corruption case concerning plot allocations by the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) in the Purbachal New Town project, in which 17 people were accused.

According to the ACC’s allegations, Tulip Siddiq, a British MP from the ruling Labour Party, used her influence to secure plot allocations in the Purbachal New Town project in the names of her mother Sheikh Rehana, sister Azmina Siddiq, and brother Radwan Mujib. Each of them was allocated a 10-katha plot in Purbachal.

After the mass uprising and the fall of the Awami League government, various corruption allegations arose against Sheikh Hasina and her family members. Tulip Siddiq’s name also came up in these investigations. Following multiple allegations of corruption and the start of investigations in Bangladesh, she resigned from her post as Economic Secretary at the UK Treasury on 14 January amid criticism.

Earlier, on 27 November, another court had sentenced Sheikh Hasina to 21 years in three cases, Sajeeb Wazed Joy to 5 years in one case, and Saima Wazed Putul to 5 years.
